These forms were brought from Taiwan to Okinawa from the legendary Chotoku Kyan, a good friend of Hohan Soken. The series were known as the "Southern Light Kata", partially because the originated from the southern islands of Formosa, but mostly because they involved lighting fast footwork and evasion techniques. Soken incorporated these forms into the Matumura System when he returned to Okinawa in 1952; upon finding out that his friend Master Kyan had died of starvation in WWII.
